Care for everyone in the community

Ruben starts the video with a clear message: “Don’t let age, insurance barriers, financial worries or transportation hold you back.”

He founded Ocean Wave Hearing “to provide equitable, accessible care for everyone in our community.” In plain terms, that means the way you pay shouldn’t decide whether you get good hearing care. Whether you’re using insurance, an HSA or FSA, or paying yourself, Ruben’s goal is to find a path that works for your budget.

Here’s a look at each option, what to ask, and where to learn more.

Traditional health insurance

Some employer and private health plans include a hearing aid benefit. Many don’t. When a plan does include one, it may cover only part of the cost, limit how often you can get new hearing aids, or require certain providers. Curious why? Read why insurance rarely covers hearing aids.

Before your visit, call the number on your insurance card and ask:

  • Does my plan include a hearing aid benefit?
  • How much does it pay, and how often?
  • Is a hearing test covered?
  • Do I need to use certain providers, or can I be reimbursed?
  • What paperwork do I need to submit a claim?

Ask Ocean Wave Hearing for help, too. When it applies, the team can help check what your plan does and doesn’t cover before your evaluation. Your plan always has the final word.

Medicare Advantage plans

Traditional Medicare generally does not cover hearing aids. Some Medicare Advantage plans include a hearing benefit, and some don’t. The details, like how much they pay and which providers you can use, vary from plan to plan and can change from year to year.

If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, check your plan’s benefits guide or call your plan before your visit. Ruben mentions Medicare Advantage plans in the video because he wants everyone to know they’re welcome to ask about their options. That’s not a promise of coverage. It’s an invitation to find out together.

HSA and FSA funds

If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) through work, you may be able to use those funds for eligible hearing care, including hearing aids. Many working adults use them this way.

How it usually works:

  1. Check eligibility with your HSA or FSA administrator or benefits portal.
  2. Get a clear quote from Ocean Wave Hearing.
  3. Pay with your HSA or FSA card if your plan allows it, or pay another way and submit receipts for reimbursement.
  4. Keep your paperwork. Ocean Wave Hearing provides itemized documentation for your records.

Rules are set by your plan, not by Ocean Wave Hearing. Watch for FSA deadlines, since some plans have “use it or lose it” rules. Ocean Wave Hearing doesn’t give tax or benefits advice, so confirm with your administrator first. Learn more on our HSA and FSA page.

Paying out of pocket and monthly payments

Many people pay for hearing aids themselves. Ocean Wave Hearing publishes starting prices by technology level, so you can plan before you visit. Your quote covers more than the devices. It includes your evaluation, fitting and programming, and follow-up visits as outlined at your fitting.

If you’d rather spread out the cost, monthly payment plans are available through third-party financing. Approval and terms are set by the lender, not by Ocean Wave Hearing. Always read the lender’s terms before you apply.

When getting there is the problem

Ruben lists transportation as one of the barriers that holds people back. Taking time off work, finding a ride or sitting in a waiting room can make it hard to get care. That’s why Ruben comes to your home anywhere in the Coastal Bend. You can also visit the Corpus Christi office if that’s easier.

A simple plan to get started

  1. Check your insurance, Medicare Advantage, HSA or FSA benefits.
  2. Call Ocean Wave Hearing with any questions about your plan.
  3. Get a hearing test and a clear quote before you commit.
  4. Choose how to pay: benefits, HSA or FSA, out of pocket, financing, or a mix.
  5. Try your hearing aids with the 45-day no-risk trial.

You don’t have to figure this out alone. Many people use more than one option, like insurance benefits plus HSA funds, or HSA funds plus a payment plan. Ruben can walk you through the numbers and answer questions before your visit, so there are no surprises.

As Ruben says: “Price should never stand between you and your quality of life.”
